Risk Factors

As with many human cancers, the cause of canine cancer is often unknown. However, there are certain risk factors that increase the odds of your dog developing cancer. Many of these are true for both humans and dogs.

  • Genetics
  • Obesity
  • Second-hand smoke
  • Exposure to toxins such as pesticides, herbicides, insecticides, paints, solvents, and cleaners
  • Exposure to UV rays – Dogs can get skin cancer too. Light-colored dogs are more susceptible, although any dog could get skin cancer. Apply a dog-safe sunscreen to sensitive areas such as the nose and ears.
