What Happened
So, what happened to Lord Barkington? The short version: It all started with a lump on his hind leg. He later developed a limp. We went from vet to vet trying to find out what was wrong with our fur baby. In total, Lord Barkington was misdiagnosed 6 times by 5 different veterinarians over the course of approximately 1 1/2 months. Meanwhile, his tumor was growing bigger and, unbeknownst to us, the cancer was spreading.
It was finally diagnosed as fibrosarcoma. Fibrosarcoma is a cancer that originates in the fibrous connective tissue found at the ends of bones and then spreads to the surrounding soft tissue. From there, it can spread throughout the body.
By the time we discovered it was cancer, his case was very progressed and very serious. It had spread to his back and his lungs. We treated it with every method we could: radiation, chemotherapy, and surgery. Fibrosarcoma is usually a slow-growing cancer. Unfortunately, Lord Barkington’s version was a very aggressive cancer that continued to spread faster than we could treat it. Less than 4 months after developing symptoms, Lord Barkington was dead.
